The first step to becoming meditative, is addressing our mind chatter. So the first phase that we enter, when we decide to take the path of meditation, is the monkey mind phase. This is where our thoughts seem to be just running on continuously, bouncing from one thought to the next, out of control - The monkey mind phase.
So what we need to calm this mind chatter and get out of the monkey mind phase, is we need a little space between ourselves and our thoughts. See, during the monkey mind phase we experience ourselves as our thoughts. Meaning, when our minds think something, we automatically react as if that is our true reality. But in fact it is not, the monkey mind phase is simply the mind going on and on without our control. And so we really want to come into a practice, come into a place that we can create, just enough space between our true self and the mind. So how can we do this?
You can begin with a very simple meditation practice. Each day, find a comfortable place to sit, where you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably and don’t worry about any difficult yoga postures, simply sit as you can now. Next notice if you are holding your breath or any stress or tension, and relax that, and begin to breathe continuously.
Taking a deep breath in through your nose and as you exhale release your breath as slowly as you can, bringing yourself into the present moment. Allow your breath to return to it's normal breathing pattern. Begin to simply watch the natural inhalation and exhalation of your breath.
